Come learn about proper techniques of Storyboarding for TV and feature films. Lead by Lucasfilm and ex-Pixar Story artist, Sergio Paez. Through lectures, demonstrations, guest speakers, and hands on training, learn the tools to work as a professional story artist in the film industry. Topics include: screen direction, staging, camera placement, visual contrast, pacing, composition and much more.

This is a hands on, in-depth class covering all topics of storyboarding in Animation, Live-action, and Video games. Classes go for 3 hours and include refreshments. Through demonstrations, hands on learning, lecture, and film analysis, you will learn the guidelines to professionally stage and illustrate a scripted scene. This class is for all levels of experience from the most novice to the seasoned professional. Some drawing experience recommended, but not necessary.

Topics of discussion. Screen direction- learn when to use character and camera placement to your advantage to tell a clear and efficient story. You will gain a clear understanding of when to deviate from the norm and tricks on how to disguise screen direction flaws when there is no other alternative. Perspective for storyboarding- learn the shorthand of drawing perspective used at companies such as Pixar and Lucasfilm.

Staging- Proper arrangement of you stage elements is crucial in telling your story. Learn to simplify and cheat your objects for dynamic effect. Composition- Give your production greater visual interest through proper understanding of color, depth, perspective, lines, and movement in your picture frame. The thumbnail Process- Learn a method for thinking through the script in a quick and efficient way.

Storyboarding in a 3D Production- There are key differences the story artist must be aware of when planning for 3D Stories. Learn how to tackle difficult scenes and make them look easy.

Recommended materials. Bring a notebook and a drawing pad for taking notes.
Thick black Sharpie pen for quick sketches. Kneaded eraser. Black prisma colored pencil. Assortment of graphite pencils

About the Artist

Sergio is a San Francisco artist specializing in storyboards, animation, and visual development for TV, Feature film, and games. His animation credits in the United States and Europe include projects for Pixar, Lucasfilm, Sony, and Sega. As an independent filmmaker Sergio's work has been shown at the Los Angeles International Film Festival, the North Hampton Film Festival, and Microcinefest in Baltimore. Most recently Sergio's work was featured in "The Art of Darkwatch" published by Design Studio Press. Currently Sergio is a lead Storyboard Artist on the Clone Wars Animated Series at Lucasfilm Animation.
